There are 147 finished photographs from this little Harrogate wedding. You won't see the couple properly in this story, and you won't see their names either. That's deliberate. These are their memories, not ours to put all over the internet.

What you can see is everything around them: Harrogate, the ceremony room, flowers, rings, little details, sunshine, rain and the story of a few hours that changed the way we think about Yorkshire Magic Memories.

A Very Relaxed Wedding In Harrogate

This wasn't a huge wedding with hundreds of guests, a packed timetable and somebody checking a spreadsheet every ten minutes.

It was small. It was personal. And it might have been one of the most relaxed weddings I've ever worked on.

The couple arrived together for their midday ceremony in Harrogate. No manufactured first look, no pretending they hadn't seen each other that morning and no pressure to make the day fit somebody else's idea of what a wedding should look like.

They were simply getting married. My job was to capture it.

Heather And Anna Made Our First Visit Brilliant

This was my first time photographing a ceremony at Harrogate Registry Office, and registrars Heather and Anna were phenomenal.

They explained where I could work, what was happening and how everything would run. There was none of that feeling that the photographer was somehow an inconvenience in the room. Quite the opposite.

They were friendly, helpful and genuinely lovely to work alongside. At the end there were hugs and some incredibly kind comments about how respectfully I'd photographed the ceremony.

After 28 years behind a camera, that still means something.

Then Harrogate Gave Us The Sunshine

After the ceremony came the family photographs outside. Nothing elaborate and nothing ridiculously posed. Just the people who mattered.

Then we disappeared for a little while with the newlyweds. We found a little Yorkshire ginnel almost by accident. Walk through it and suddenly everything opened out into a huge green space with enormous trees.

It was exactly the sort of photograph we'd been looking for: the couple becoming small in the frame, the surroundings becoming enormous, and the picture being as much about where they were as what they were doing.

From there we headed into Valley Gardens, around the Sun Pavilion, and somehow the sun decided to cooperate at exactly the right moment.

We had beautiful light through the trees and enough time to create the photographs we'd talked about beforehand without ever turning the afternoon into a photoshoot. They'd just got married. The photographs were there to remember it, not take over it.

And just like that — married.

364 Presses Of The Shutter. 147 Photographs.

I don't believe in firing thousands of photographs at a wedding and hoping the right one exists somewhere amongst them.

I've been a photographer for 28 years. Experience teaches you to watch, anticipate, understand your equipment and, ultimately, press the shutter when there's actually a photograph there.

Across this wedding I captured 364 frames.

After the cull, 147 remained.

Not 147 because we needed to hit a number. 147 because those were the photographs that told the day.

What Actually Counts As A Memory?

Until now, we'd naturally talked about Memories largely in terms of what guests capture and upload. Someone takes a photograph, records a video or leaves a voice message, scans the QR code and another Memory appears.

But on this wedding I was doing something slightly different. I was the photographer.

Those 147 finished photographs were captured professionally rather than uploaded from somebody's phone, but they're still photographs of their people and their day. They're still being kept and shared with the couple.

So what are they?

They're Memories.

147 Photographer Memories.

That's the bit that clicked. Yorkshire Magic Memories doesn't have to mean only the things guests uploaded. It can mean everything that was captured from your day.

Guest Memories. Photographer Memories. Photographs. Video. Voice. The little bits nobody planned. Different perspectives of the same day, brought together.

And Then It Rained

We got the sunshine when we needed it. Then Yorkshire remembered it was Yorkshire.

The timing was almost ridiculous. We'd had the sunshine when we needed it and got the photographs through the gardens. Almost as soon as we left, the weather changed.

Proper rain.

Later there was one final stop at a little woodland walking area. Nothing complicated — a few relaxed photographs, a walk and some time with the couple's dog.

Then the camera went away. Job done.

And as I left to head home? The heavens opened again. Somehow we'd been given exactly the gaps in the weather we needed.

Then They Just Carry On With Their Lives

There's something slightly strange about photographing a wedding.

For a few hours, you're right inside somebody else's enormous life moment. You're watching everything, anticipating things before they happen and preserving fractions of seconds that they could still be looking at decades from now.

Then it's finished.

They're married. You pack the cameras away, get in the car, and they carry on with their lives.

Our bit is done.

Except it isn't completely, because 147 little pieces of that day now exist that didn't exist before.

And that's really what Memories has always been about.

Not uploads. Not QR codes. Not technology.

Keeping the bits you'd otherwise lose.

Final Thoughts

This was a tiny wedding compared with many of the events we work, but that's exactly why it stayed with me. No huge production, no pressure to perform for the camera and no need to turn the day into something it wasn't.

Just a couple getting married in Harrogate, their family, their dog, some ridiculously well-timed Yorkshire sunshine and 147 finished memories of a few hours that won't happen again.
