Yorkshire Magic Mirror ·

AI can make the idea. We turn it into something that actually works.

AI is coming for our jobs.

Apparently.

If you believe everything you read, artificial intelligence is replacing designers, photographers, developers, writers and just about every other creative profession.

So, is AI impacting our work, our team and the products we create at Yorkshire Magic Mirror?

Yes.

But probably not in the way you're thinking.

AI isn't taking the creativity away from our clients. It is giving them a completely new way to show us what is inside their heads.

No. We Are Not Scared Of AI.

Quite the opposite.

We have always offered custom everything.

We do not want your wedding, birthday or event to look like somebody else's. We do not want you scrolling through Template 1, Template 2 and Template 3 and choosing the one you dislike the least.

We want to know what is in your head.

And AI has suddenly given our clients another brilliant way to show us.

Draw it.

Commission it.

Make it in Canva.

Or spend three evenings arguing with ChatGPT until it finally produces the dragon you wanted.

Send it to us.

Because That Is Where Our Job Starts

AI can be astonishingly good at turning a sentence into something you can actually see.

That matters.

A couple who might struggle to explain a theme can suddenly show us a picture and say, "Something like this."

Brilliant.

Now we have somewhere to start.

But there is an important distinction.

An AI image is not necessarily finished artwork.

It might look beautiful on a phone screen. It might capture the colours perfectly. It might even make everyone immediately say, "That's it!"

But our artwork has another job to do.

It has to work.

A Pretty Picture Is Not A Magic Mirror Design

When we design artwork for our Magic Mirror, we are not simply making a nice border.

We are thinking about the photograph before anyone has even stood in front of the camera.

Where will people's faces be?

How much of the photograph are we sacrificing to decoration?

Will important artwork disappear behind somebody's head?

Is the text readable?

Will those tiny details survive a real 6x4 print?

Does the composition still work when three people squeeze into the photograph instead of two?

And can we change it accurately when the client asks us to?

"Can't You Just Move That Bit?"

This is probably the biggest difference between an AI-generated image and the professional artwork we build.

The AI might have created something that looks finished.

But very often it is exactly that: one finished, flattened image.

If a flower needs moving, there may not be a flower layer for us to move.

If a name is in the wrong place, there may not be editable text sitting underneath it.

If we need another inch of clear photographic space, there is not necessarily a hidden background waiting behind the decoration we remove.

And if we ask the AI to regenerate the whole thing just to change one detail, it may helpfully change another six things at the same time.

It is an image. Not a working design file.

So we rebuild it.

That Is Where Professional Design Still Matters

We look at the idea and work out what made it good in the first place.

Was it the colour palette?

The flowers?

The typography?

The balance?

Or simply the feeling it gave the client when they first saw it?

Then we look at the problems.

We recreate the elements we need. We separate things into editable layers. We move them. Resize them. Change the typography. Create proper space for the photograph. Make sure the venue and date sit where they should. Check the resolution. Check the print. Then check it again.

We are not trying to make the AI image "more professional" for the sake of it.

We are turning the idea into something we can control.

Accuracy Comes From Being Able To Change Things

This matters when you start making the design personal.

"Can that flower move slightly higher?"

Yes.

"Can our names go down the side instead?"

Yes.

"Can you make the bottom less busy so we can see more of the photograph?"

Yes.

"We've changed the date."

Yes. Even that.

Because once we have built proper artwork, those things are no longer requests for an AI model to reinterpret the entire image.

They are design changes.

Then AI Proved Our Point For Us

There is a slightly ridiculous footnote to this article.

We wanted a graphic to explain everything you have just read.

Nothing particularly complicated.

Show an imaginary client's request.

Show what AI might make from it.

Show how a designer could start rebuilding it.

Then finish with a piece of artwork we had already designed and the real photograph it produced.

There was just one important detail.

We already had the finished artwork.

We already had the finished photograph.

We already knew exactly where the journey had to end.

So we used AI to help us make the explanatory graphic for this very article.

It took seven attempts.

Seven Attempts. For Something We Had Already Designed.

And this is where it became funny.

One version looked great, except the imaginary AI starting point already looked far too much like our finished artwork.

So we changed it.

Another version still had our blue watercolour style appearing halfway through the process, which completely undermined the story we were trying to tell.

So we changed it.

Then we finally got the progression right and AI helpfully replaced our actual finished artwork with its own version of it.

So we changed it again.

Then the intermediate design did not look enough like the client's AI idea, so the transformation did not make sense.

Again.

And again.

Until eventually we had something that told the story properly.

Seven AI design attempts made while creating the graphic for this article
Even with the destination already known, getting the explanatory graphic right took seven attempts.

And That Is With Designers Telling AI What Was Wrong

That is the important bit.

After every attempt, somebody still had to look at the result and make a decision.

The image generator did not know that the story had become confusing.

It did not know that the watercolour flowers had appeared too early.

It did not know that replacing our final artwork defeated the entire point of the graphic.

It just generated another image.

Somebody still had to look at it and say:

That's good. But that's not right.

That judgement is a huge part of design.

So Did AI Fail?

No.

Not even slightly.

It did exactly what we wanted it to do.

It let us explore ideas incredibly quickly.

Every generation gave us something to react to.

Every mistake made the direction clearer.

And something that could have taken considerably longer to visualise was happening in seconds.

That is why we are excited about what AI can do for our clients rather than frightened by it.

You Do Not Need To Be A Designer

You do not need Photoshop.

You do not need to understand layers, masks, bleed, transparency, resolution or aspect ratios.

You do not even need to know whether the thing you have imagined is technically possible.

That is our problem.

Your job is to have the idea.

Make something weird.

Make something personal.

Create the dragon.

Recreate the place you first met.

Build an imaginary world.

Mash together three ridiculous ideas that should not possibly work.

Then show us.

You don't need to bring us perfect artwork. You just need to bring us the idea.

Yes. We Used AI To Help Write This Too.

Of course we did.

We use AI in our business because it is useful.

We used it to explore the structure of this article. We used it while developing the graphics. We used it to challenge how clearly we were explaining the difference between an image and production artwork.

But the experience behind the article is ours.

The original design work is ours.

The seven attempts really happened while making the graphic for this page.

And every decision about what was right, what was wrong and what finally worked was made by us.

AI helped us create. It did not make the decisions for us.

AI Made The Idea. We Make The Magic.

So use AI.

Play with it.

Push it.

Spend three evenings trying to get that dragon exactly how you imagined it.

Then send us what you have got.

We will look at what you created, work out what you are really trying to achieve and use our experience to turn the idea into something that works.

Not just something that looks good in an AI chat window.

Something that works on the screen.

Something that works in the photograph.

Something that looks fantastic when it comes out of the printer.

Something your guests actually want to keep.

Use AI to show us what you can see in your head.
We'll build the version that can exist in the real world.
