Yorkshire Magic Mirror ·

A brilliant family celebration featuring Mods, Ska, Bradford City, Gujarati street food and 195 instant prints.

Some bookings turn into much more than a single event.

John’s surprise 60th birthday at Eldwick Memorial Hall was our fourth booking connected to the same family and group of friends.

It started when we provided the Magic Mirror for Simon and Amy’s wedding at The Bridge in August 2025.

Since then, Simon has booked us for two work events, recommended us whenever somebody has mentioned organising a party, and now helped bring us back for another important family celebration.

This time, it was for Amy’s dad.

Sue had organised a surprise 60th birthday for John, with around 75 family members and friends waiting inside the hall.

There was a Mods and Ska theme, Bradford City details, brilliant Gujarati street food and a bespoke Magic Mirror print design created especially for John.

By the end of the night, guests had completed 82 photo sessions and taken home 195 instant prints.

A Surprise 60th At Eldwick Memorial Hall

Located just outside Bingley, Eldwick Memorial Hall was the setting for the evening, with the main entrance to the right and the Magic Mirror positioned at the back of the room.

It was a tight space.

There was not a huge amount of room around the setup, but that is something we come across regularly at village halls, community venues and busy function rooms.

The important thing is understanding how guests will move through the space and positioning everything so the experience still works properly.

So we did what we always do.

We made it work.

Four Bookings And Counting

One of the best parts of this event was how familiar it already felt.

Most of the guests remembered us from Simon and Amy’s wedding at The Bridge, so there was none of the usual period where people cautiously work out who we are or what the Magic Mirror does.

People recognised us straight away.

They came over to say hello, remembered the photos from the wedding and immediately treated us like part of the celebration.

We even arrived early enough to have a pint with Simon and Amy before the event properly started.

That probably says more about the relationship we have built than any review or recommendation ever could.

Simon and Amy originally booked us for their wedding.

Simon then brought us into two work events.

Now Sue had booked us for John’s 60th birthday.

One wedding had become four events, and somewhere along the way, clients had become friends.

A Design Created Just For John

John loved the custom print design created especially for his 60th birthday.

For every event, we create a custom print design rather than using a generic template.

For John’s birthday, the design needed to reflect the things that mattered to him.

We combined a Lambretta-style roundel with a chequered flag border and added a Bradford City corner flag detail.

The result tied together the Mods and Ska theme, John’s interests and the Bradford City decorations around the room.

John’s reaction was brilliantly simple.

When he saw the design, he pointed at it and said:

“Hey!”

He immediately recognised that the artwork had been made specifically for him.

That small reaction was exactly why we put the extra work into every print design.

Mods, Ska And A Touch Of Bradford City

The theme for the evening was unmistakably John.

Rather than filling the room with lots of fancy decorations, the family focused on the things he genuinely enjoys.

Mods and Ska formed the backbone of the celebration, with Bradford City details worked into the room and our bespoke print design.

Alongside the bespoke print design, the room had been decorated with rich burgundy and gold balloons, illuminated 60 numbers and subtle Bradford City touches. Rather than feeling over-the-top, everything reflected John's personality and made the evening feel unmistakably his.

As the evening went on, the band carried out their soundcheck with tracks from Madness and Billy Ocean, giving everyone a taste of what was still to come.

It was one of those parties where you could immediately tell it had been planned around the person being celebrated rather than simply picking a generic birthday theme.

Gujarati Street Food That Everyone Talked About

One of the highlights away from the Magic Mirror was the catering.

Guests were also welcomed with a beautiful display of homemade cupcakes before the main food was served, giving everyone chance to catch up with family and friends over something sweet.

Peacock Roadshow provided an incredible selection of Gujarati street food that quickly became a talking point amongst the guests.

The menu included curried chicken, lamb soup, rice and fresh naan breads, with everything cooked and served throughout the evening.

It wasn't just something to eat between photos.

People kept going back for more, and it's safe to say there weren't many empty plates left by the end of the night.

It's always nice seeing suppliers who genuinely care about what they're doing, and Peacock Roadshow certainly fitted into that category.

195 Instant Prints Later...

Although there were around 75 guests at the party, the Magic Mirror hardly stopped.

Across the evening we recorded 82 photo sessions and printed an impressive 195 instant prints.

That wasn't just because people were enjoying themselves.

Amy made sure of it too.

As it was her dad's birthday, she spent half the evening encouraging more family and friends to come over for photographs, and by the final part of the night the area around the Magic Mirror was absolutely packed.

One of the funniest moments came when John found a black wig amongst the props.

From that point onwards it seemed to appear in photo after photo, with guests taking turns wearing it throughout the evening.

Those little unexpected moments are often the ones people remember most when they look back through their gallery.

More Than Just Another Booking

When you've been doing weddings and events for a while, you naturally get repeat bookings.

Sometimes it's another birthday.

Sometimes it's a work event.

Occasionally it's another wedding within the same family.

But every now and again, something a little different happens.

You stop feeling like the supplier and start feeling like part of the extended celebration.

That was exactly how this evening felt.

We'd already spent time catching up with Simon and Amy before the party began, and throughout the night they kept sending more guests over to the Magic Mirror because they knew exactly how much fun everyone would have.

It never felt like we were trying to encourage people ourselves.

The family were introducing people to the Magic Mirror before we even had chance to.

A Lovely End To The Evening

Even after we'd packed everything away, the evening still hadn't quite finished.

Sue came over to give us a hug and thank us for being part of John's birthday.

Simon and Amy did exactly the same.

It sounds like a small gesture, but those moments are the ones that stay with you long after the equipment has been loaded back into the van.

Before we left, Simon summed everything up perfectly.

"If anyone ever mentions parties, I'm straight in there for you."

That means far more than any advert ever could.

The best recommendations don't come because somebody asks for one.

They happen because people genuinely want their friends and family to have the same experience they did.

Before we left, Simon joked that we needed to arrange a few beers together soon. Moments like that say far more than any review ever could, because they show how a booking can grow into a genuine friendship.

Final Thoughts

John's surprise 60th birthday wasn't the biggest event we've ever worked at.

It didn't need to be.

It was simply a brilliant family celebration, organised by people who clearly cared about getting every detail right.

From the bespoke print design and the Bradford City touches to the Mods and Ska theme, the fantastic food and a room full of familiar faces, it felt personal from beginning to end.

The Magic Mirror produced 82 photo sessions and 195 instant prints, but the numbers only tell part of the story.

For us, this was about seeing familiar faces again, celebrating another milestone with the same family and leaving knowing we'll almost certainly see them again in the future.

That's one of the best parts of this job, and we're already looking forward to the next excuse to catch up.
